Unit 5 Writing Part 2 - Review

Evaluative adjectives:

Positive:
awesome, beautiful, breathtaking, brilliant, excellent, gorgeous, interesting, sensational, stunning.

Negative:
appalling, awful, boring, depressing, disgusting, dismal, dreadful, dreary,foul, poor, tasteless, tedious, terrible, vile.


Awesome
1. very impressive or very difficult and perhaps rather frightening
an awesome sight
2. (especially North American English, informal) very good, enjoyable, etc.
I just bought this awesome new CD!
Breathtaking
1.very exciting or impressive (usually in a pleasant way)
a breathtaking view of the mountains
2. very surprising
He spoke with breathtaking arrogance.
Gorgeous
very beautiful and attractive; giving pleasure and enjoyment
a gorgeous girl/man
a gorgeous view
gorgeous weather (= warm and with a lot of sun)
Sensational
1. causing great surprise, excitement, or interest
The affair was the most sensational political sex scandal of the century.
 2.(disapproving) (of a newspaper, etc.) trying to get your interest by presenting facts or events as worse or more shocking than they really are
sensational news stories
3.(informal) extremely good; wonderful
You look sensational in that dress!
Stunning
extremely attractive or impressive
You look absolutely stunning!
a stunning view of the lake
Appalling
1.(North American English, formal or British English) shocking; extremely bad
The prisoners were living in appalling conditions.
2.(informal) very bad
The bus service is appalling now.
Awful

very bad or unpleasant
That's an awful colour.
The weather last summer was awful.
to look/feel awful (= to look/feel ill)
Dismal
causing or showing sadness
synonym: gloomy, miserable
dismal conditions/surroundings/weather
Dreadful
very bad or unpleasant
What dreadful weather!
Jane looked dreadful (= looked ill or tired).
Dreary
that makes you feel sad; dull and not interesting

Foul
(especially British English) very unpleasant; very bad
She's in a foul mood.
His boss has a foul temper.
Vile
(informal) extremely unpleasant or bad

The weather was really vile most of the time.
